Hitze und Trockenheit machen ihr nicht viel aus, Frost hingegen verträgt sie nicht. In unseren Breiten kann sie nur im Topf gehalten werden, um den Winter im Haus zu verbringen. Aus ihrer Heimat ist sie viel Licht gewöhnt, sieht folglich nach unseren finsteren Wintern nicht allzu glücklich aus. Sobald es heller wird, treibt sie aber wieder aus und entfaltet ihre hellgrünen dreigeteilten Blätter, die auf langen dünnen Stielen sitzen und anfangs von einem weichen weißen Flaum bewachsen sind. Aus Samen gezogene Pflanzen wachsen recht schnell heran, blühen im ersten Jahr aber erst im Herbst. Aus den in dichten Köpfchen angeordneten dunklen Knospen schieben sich schmale violette Blüten, die gerne von Hummeln angeflogen werden. Nach der Befruchtung bilden sich gezähnte kleine Kapseln, die wie spitze Klauen aussehen und jeweils einen Samen enthalten. Die Samenschale ist sehr hart, was die Keimung erschwert.
